DO YOU KEEP FORGETTING WHAT YOU JUST STUDIED?

Why Do I Forget What I Just Studied So Quickly?

"Gaining new information can interfere with your memories of old information, when the two are similar. One possibility is that the neural circuitry associated with the old memories gets rewired and harder to access and retrieve later-resulting in what we know as forgetting (Chang 2020).

TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE INFORMATION FIRST

• It is simpler to memorize information that is arranged and makes sense to you.

• Spend some time learning the information if you discover that you don't comprehend it before attempting to memorize it.

TEST YOURSELF

• Every so often, test yourself by consciously recalling the material you're trying to learn. Actively test yourself, don't just go over your notes or a textbook.

• Ask yourself questions and make a conscious effort to recall the information without consulting the solution or the source.

• You'll be able to see which concepts you're having trouble with, and you can then use one of the memory techniques to assist yourself learn it.

• Don't test yourself right away after trying to memorize things, too. To determine whether anything has truly stayed in your memory, give it a few hours or perhaps a day or two

USE DISTRIBUTED PRACTICE

THE CONCEPT MUST BE MEMORABLE AND IT MUST BE REPEATED.

TO INGRAIN INFORMATION INTO YOUR MEMORY, REPEAT CONCEPTS TO YOURSELF.

TECHNIQUES FOR REPETITION CAN INCLUDE USING FLASH CARDS, THE STRAIGHTFORWARD ADVICE IN THIS SECTION, AND SELF-TESTING.

YOU SHOULD SPREAD OUT YOUR STUDYING AND REPETITION ACROSS A FEW DAYS, AND YOU SHOULD START LENGTHENING THE INTERVALS BETWEEN YOUR STUDY SESSIONS.

SPACING THINGS OUT AND GRADUALLY LENGTHENING THE GAPS BETWEEN CAN ASSIST US STRENGTHEN OUR SENSE OF MASTERY AND CEMENT THE IDEAS IN OUR MINDS.

 USE MNEMONICS

• MNEMONICS ARE TECHNIQUES AND METHODS THAT HELP PEOPLE REMEMBER KNOWLEDGE. THE FIRST LETTER OF EACH WORD IN A SENTENCE AND EACH WORD IN A LIST THAT NEEDS TO BE MEMORIZED ARE EXAMPLES OF A COMMON SORT OF THIS.

• FOR INSTANCE, BY ADOPTING THE PHRASE PLEASE EXCUSE MY DEAR AUNT SALLY, MANY KIDS WERE TAUGHT THE MATHEMATICAL SEQUENCE OF OPERATIONS (PARENTHESES, EXPONENTS, MULTIPLY, DIVIDE, ADD, SUBTRACT).
